Autism guide

However much we try to understand and empathize with an autistic child or individual within the family or our surroundings, it is obvious that as outsiders we would find it extremely difficult to know what’s going on. In case of an autistic person at home, the stress on families can be enormous. This is mostly because it is very difficult for non-autistic people to attune to a weaker individual’s frequency. The stress is felt most by the closest family, as they have to be responsible for an autistic individual at all times. The degree of autism varies from person to person, hence it is easier to work with certain patients but this may not hold true for other autistic individuals.

Since autism causes degrees of mental retardation, an affected person may not always be able to express their needs too well. This can get very exasperating because at times family members may not be able to fully comprehend what is being expressed. This causes a lot of despair because of the helplessness that grows when you are unable to understand a loved one’s needs. In order to deal with such stress experienced by families it is important that persons who are responsible for caring for an autistic individual attend counseling sessions that enable them to understand sign language and sounds used by the patient.

The most stressful experience most families have had to deal with is violent behavior by their children. At times autistic persons are known to scratch and hurt themselves, apart from banging their heads on the wall. This can cause serious head injuries or wounds. The sad part being that most patients are unable to distinguish that they are harming themselves. As such they are literally insensitive to pain and do not realize the damage violent outburst can cause as they use such acts as a mode of expression.

Stress is also caused by the fact that most autistic persons do understand parts of what’s going on and at times even participate in revelry. But the impact of their mental retardation is such that they may not identify with the same situation at another time. As such, parents and family members may not always be able to bring a smile on an affected individual’s face and seeing your child smile is one of the great pleasures of parenthood.

Over the years, society has grown to accept autism and united to put up a brave front in providing the best they can to affected persons. Many physicians and counselors help parents and families to understand the situation and deal with stress. Many NGO’s and social service groups arrange for seminars and sessions to discuss issues related to autism. Such public forums are a meeting ground for families that deal with autism at home. These platforms allow parents to discuss and share issues that they are faced with. This allows them to understand their wards better apart from finding solace in a community that is as close as family.
